ภาษาอังกฤษ แก้ไข

รากศัพท์ 1 แก้ไข

จากภาษาอังกฤษกลาง diggen (ขุด), จากภาษาอังกฤษเก่า dīcian (to dig a ditch, to mound up earth) (เทียบ ภาษาอังกฤษเก่า dīcere (digger)) จาก dīc, dīċ (dike, ditch) จาก ภาษาเจอร์แมนิกดั้งเดิม *dīkaz, *dīkiją (pool, puddle), จากภาษาอินโด-ยูโรเปียนดั้งเดิม *dʰīgʷ-, *dʰeygʷ- (to stab, dig). Additionally, ภาษาอังกฤษกลาง diggen may derive from an unrecorded suffixed variant, *dīcgian. Akin to ภาษาเดนมาร์ก dige (to dig, raise a dike), ภาษาสวีเดน dika (to dig ditches). Related to ภาษาฝรั่งเศสกลาง diguer (to dig), from ภาษาฝรั่งเศสเก่า dikier, itself a borrowing of the same Germanic root (จากภาษาดัตช์กลาง dijc). More at ditch, dike.

รากศัพท์ 2 แก้ไข

จากอังกฤษแบบอเมริกา dig, จากAfrican American Vernacular English; due to lack of writing of slave speech, etymology is difficult to trace, but it has been suggested that it is from ภาษาโวลอฟ dëgg, dëgga (to understand, to appreciate).[1] It has also been suggested that it is from ภาษาไอริช dtuig.[2] Others do not propose a distinct etymology, instead considering this a semantic shift of the existing English term (compare dig in/dig into).[3]
