Template:R:CPD

This template may be used in "References" sections and on talk pages to cite John Walker's Critical Pronouncing Dictionary. If a (single) page number is added, it will also automatically generate a link to the correct page of the book on Google Books.

The template takes the following positional or named parameters:

  • |1= or |entry= – the entry in the Dictionary to be cited. If this parameter is omitted, the template will use the name of the Wiktionary entry.
  • |section= – by default, the template will assume that the material referenced is part of the main body of the Dictionary. Use |section= to reference a portion of the prefatory material:
    • |section=preface – for the preface.
    • |section=irish – for the included "rules to be observed by the natives of Ireland in order to obtain a just pronunciation of English".
    • |section=scottish – for the included "rules to be observed by the natives of Scotland for obtaining a just pronunciation of English".
    • |section=foreigners – for the included "directions to foreigners, in order to attain a knowledge of the marks in this dictionary, and to acquire a right pronunciation of every word in the English language".
    • |section=principles – for Walker's "principles of English pronunciation".
  • |2=, |page=, or |pages= – the page number(s) of the Dictionary on which the entry appears. Use |pages= if indicating a range of pages, and separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=201–202.
  • |3=, |column=, or |columns= – the column number(s) of the Dictionary on which the entry appears. Use |columns= if indicating a range of columns, and separate the first and last column numbers of the range with an en dash.
  • |4= or |passage= – a passage quoted from the Dictionary.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
  • |gpage= – by default, the URL and the displayed page number are assumed to be based on the page numbers present in the Dictionary. To base the number on Google Books' internal page numbering, use |gpage=1 or |gpage=yes.
  • |ppage= – by default, the URL and the displayed page number are assumed to be based on the page numbers present in the Dictionary. To base the number on the page numbers utilised in a PDF copy, use |ppage=1 or |ppage=yes.
