สืบทอดจากภาษาฝรั่งเศสเก่า compaing, compain, จากละตินช่วงปลาย compāniō (nominative form) (เทียบภาษาอิตาลี compagnoด้วย), จากcom- + pānis (แปลตรงตัว, กับ + ขนมปัง), a word first attested in the แฟรงก์ Lex Salica as a translation of a Germanic word, probably แฟรงก์ *galaibo, *gahlaibo (“messmate”, แปลตรงตัวว่า “with-bread”), from *hlaib (“loaf, bread”). See also compagnon, จากรูปกรรมตรงของ Late Latin term (compāniōnem), from whence also English companion. ความหมายว่า "แฟน" ตัดมาจากpetit copain.
