This template is used in etymology sections, for terms whose origin cannot be determined.

It is the last resort to display after a word's (possible) origin cannot be found anywhere.

Parameters

|1= – required

The language code (see Wiktionary:Languages) for the language of the current etymology.

|title=

(optional) Overrides the default text that is displayed.

|nocap=1

(optional) Shows the default text with a lowercase initial letter.

|notext=1

(optional) Don't display any text.

|nocat=1

(optional) Don't categorise the entry.

|sort=

(optional) The sort key to use for categories.

or

{{unknown|en}}

to display the following text:

ไม่ทราบรากศัพท์

and automatically categorise the page in Category:English terms with unknown etymologies.
